What Are DNS (Domain Name Server) Records? A, AAA, CNAME, MX, TXT

What is an ‘A’ record?

An A record maps a domain name to the IP address of the computer hosting the domain. An A record uses a domain name to find the IP address of a computer connected to the internet. “A record” stands for “address record” and is the purest form of DNS. An A record allows users to type in an easily recognizable domain name and still get pointed to the IP address. For example if you pull the google.com, the ‘A’ record takes to the IP address of: 172.212.5.78.

‘A’ records only hold Ipv4 addresses, if the site has a Ipv6 address, it will instead use an ‘AAAA’ record.

What is a ‘AAAA’ record?

If a website has an IPv6 address, it will instead use an ‘AAAA’ record instead of an A record.

What is a CNAME record and how does it work?

A CNAME record, also known as canonical name or alias record, is a DNS record type used in place of A (for IPv4) or AAAA (for IPv6) record when the domain or subdomain is an alias of another domain. All CNAME records must point to a domain name, not an IP address. CNAME records can be used to alias one name to another. CNAME stands for Canonical Name.

A common example is when you have both example.com and www.example.com pointing to the same application and hosted by the same server. To avoid maintaining two different records, it’s common to create:

An A record for example.com pointing to the server IP address
A CNAME record for www.example.com pointing to example.com
As a result, example.com points to the server IP address, and www.example.com points to the same address via example.com. If the IP address changes, you only need to update it in one place: just edit the A record for example.com, and www.example.com automatically inherits the changes. If this record is broken your website will not work.

What is a MX record and how does it work?

MX stands for Mail eXchange. MX Records tell email delivery agents where they should deliver your email. You can have many MX records for a domain. They provide a way to have redundancy and ensure email will always be delivered. If this record is broken your email will not work.

What is a TXT record for a domain?

About TXT records. TXT records are a type of Domain Name System (DNS) record that contains text information for sources outside of your domain. You add these records to your domain settings. You can use TXT records for various purposes. Google uses them to verify domain ownership and to ensure email security.

Where can these Records be found?

These records can be found and edited on your cpanel with most hosts. Be careful how you edit these, a broken record will result in your website or email failing to work, properly, or not at all.
