SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization, while SEM is the acronym for Search Engine Marketing. Basically the difference is SEO refers to “organic search inclusion” while SEM refers to “paid search inclusion”. It is important to have a good SEO campaign going before you look into SEM because truthfully you might not even need SEM if your SEO is setup right. You will pay for a good SEO manager, but you won’t pay per click so the costs are much lower.
When you have a good “organic presents” on the web, then you can avoid the cost of “paying per click advertising” which can be crazy expensive. SEM includes many forms of inclusion to search; such as Google ADWords which is the most common example of Pay-Per-Click advertising. Yellow Pages also offers SEM up the wazoo, (I will write an article about them next, I am not a big fan of their mumbo jumbo, shock and awe techniques, I doubt few webmasters are. Little hint if you are comparing them to Gold Book, you will get just as much online “bang for your buck” with Gold Book as you do with Yellowpages).
You can dazzle people all you want but in many cases an unglamorous, well-structured social media campaign, with well set-up website that has clean code, organized data, keyword rich in content, and thought out METTA tags, equals a solid SEO campaign. And yes I said metta tags, because 35% of your traffic is from search engines other than Google…so they still matter! Sure it takes time to set-up a good SEO campaign, so you pay for some hours up front, but you save a bundle going forward. As far as SEO or SEM go I always like to start small and then grow it, if you don’t need SEM why pay for it? If you do need SEM and in some cases you do need it, you will need less of it if your SEO is setup right.
